Have you
ever been on your computer, and notice that something isn't quite right? Things
seem to be running slow, or maybe you are getting more pop-ups than you ever
have in the past. This is a sign that your computer may be infected with
Malware.
Malware is
basically a bad program that has infected your computer without your knowledge.
Backdoor programs or Trojans are types of Malware. The damage these programs
can cause range from annoying pop-ups to deleting files that your computer
needs to function. You may also come across the term spyware as you are
searching. Spyware is a type of Malware that tracks what you are doing on your
computer. It can be fairly benign, collecting data for research purposes or it
could have a more ominous purpose, like collecting banking information and
passwords.
How do you
prevent these programs from getting on your computer or from doing damage if
they happen to slip through? One of the solutions is to look online for virus
or malware scanners. There are several reputable free programs, and of course,
several that you need to pay for. In any case, they basically work the same
way. The program scans your machine looking for things that shouldn't be there,
like spyware or a Trojan. When it is done, a list of the programs that it has
found will pop up, and then you can delete them.
Some people run
these programs on a daily basis, some less frequently. In any case, the
important thing is to make sure that you are aware that there are programs that
can hurt your computer floating around the internet. As long as you know they are there, and are
vigilant about checking your computer, you will be fine.
